Learning French?

Starting within the next couple days I want to start teaching myself French. What is the best way to go about learning how to learn it? Right now I have a french pen pal so that is going to help but I am trying to get an idea on the best box set. Are they all about the same? I was thinking Rosetta Stone, right some I have something by Barron's or something.. I got it from the library for the time being. About how much time would I have to put into learning the language to be fairly proficient by May-June-ish?
