There is a genre of music known as French pop music. French pop music and Chanson both have their place in the french culture. What started out as two distinctive forms of music eventually combined together and became the sound we hear today. Singers, who came from francophone countries, such as Belgium, Haiti and France mostly did this style of music. Francophone means that their national language is French.

Brigitte Bardot is normally associated with film and has graced the French Cinema for several decades. However, aside from being a world-renowned film actor and ballet dancer she also recorded a number of songs after retiring from film in 1973. She collaborated with the likes of Serge Gainsbourg during the 60s and 70s.

Charles Aznavour has written more than 800 songs. His songs have been translated into English, Spanish and German. Beginning during his kindergarten days, he displayed an enormous talent in music, and worked hard to pay for his singing and dance lessons. He entered the theatre at the young age of 9 in the play 'Emil and the Detectives'. He was quite popular for his street-styled songs which he composed for musicians and performers. His contribution to French Music is massive and highly-acclaimed.

Jane Birkin was born in London, but lives in France. She is an actress and singer. She has won many awards and she received the Female Artist of the Year award in 1992. Her daughter has sung backing vocals for some of her music.

Patrick Bruel is a French singer, actor and poker player of Jewish descent. He started to pursue his singing career in 1975. His first single was released in 1982. He made five studio albums and a few live albums. In 1998, he won a World Series of Poker bracelet.

Carla Bruni was a fashion icon who quit fashion and became highly popular for her songs. She writes lyrics for songs, composes and sings. Here are a few of her famous songs - Notre Amour Est Mort, Ta Tienne, La Possibilit D'une le, Il Vecchio E Il Bambino and L'antilope.

Julien Clerc grew up listening to classical music. He learned to play the piano at the early age of six. He began to compose songs during his high school and university years. His first album was released in 1968. He was recognized for his famous vibrato voice and neo-symphonic music.

French pop music was considerably popular and the translated versions of famous songs were greatly appreciated by people. French pop music has a distinctive style and sound.
