French Skiing Holidays – Where Should You Go?

France is an eternally popular holiday destination for those who have a passion for skiing. There are a great number of resorts to choose from in the French Alps, with plenty of long slopes for the more experienced skier and gentler slopes for beginners. Combine this with the endless opportunities to indulge in a spot of apres ski and you have the perfect winter holiday.

Courchevel - Courchevel is widely regarded as one of the top skiing resorts in France - if not the best. The resort is made up of four villages set on a range of levels with Courchevel being set the highest. Access to each of the villages is made up by a series of linking ski buses and ski lifts. Courchevel remains popular because it offers so much, there are great beginners slopes and more challenging slopes for the serious skier. Other winter sports offered here include snowboarding, tobogganing and ice-skating. Throw into the mix some great bars and eateries to enjoy a spot of apres ski and you have the perfect winter holiday experience.

Chamonix - This is one of the best-known ski resorts within the French Alps and is automatically associated with skiing. Set just below Europe's highest mountain, Mont Blanc, the location is stunning and you are only one hours drive away from Geneva. The slopes here suit experienced skiers although there are also beginner slopes and Chamonix is well known for it's busy nightlife with an array of lively bars and restaurants for you to enjoy yourself in.

Val d'Isere - Val d'Isere is another of the French Alps top skiing holiday destinations. This is a big resort offering opportunities for high altitude skiing and off-piste skiing for the adventurous and more experienced skier. This resort boasts several slopes famous for competitions including the Olympic Men's Downhill slope from 1992. There's something for everyone here with slopes that are suitable for intermediate levels skiers and slopes that would suit children and beginners.

Les Deux Alpes - This lively ski resort is very popular with all kinds of skiers and is a good place for families to visit. There is a good selection of clubs, bars and restaurants too for those who enjoy their apres ski as much as the skiing. Les Deux Alpes boasts 427 hectares of marked pistes (nearly 225 km) this includes 20 km cross-country. You can also enjoy snowshoeing, ice climbing and skidooing here. There is a nursery for very young children and children can start to learn snow sports from the age three upwards.

Flaine - This lively and popular resort is a favourite with families as it offers great skiing opportunities for all ages from two and half and onwards. There are some superb children's ski schools in Flaine where your passion for skiing may get passed on to your little ones. This isn't the resort for you if you are expecting wild apres ski fun and nightlife but there is plenty of family-friendly evening activities for you to enjoy.
