Holiday Dangers for Your Puppy
With all of the cooking, baking and decorating going on around the holidays, it is important to know what may be dangerous to your puppy and how to keep them safe from accidental exposure to these contaminates.
Chocolate: We all know chocolate is poisonous to dogs and that does not change around the holidays. We may eat tons of things we shouldn’t and gain too much weight but weight gain is the least of your English Bulldog puppy’s worries with chocolate. Be sure to keep all cookies and cooking materials put away and out of reach of your puppy. It only takes a very small amount of cooking cocoa to become life threatening for your dog. Do not leave any chocolates within reach of your puppy and you’ll all be safe for the season!
Onions, Garlic and Mushrooms: You’re busy cooking your stuffing – chopping up onions and garlic to throw in. This season, keep a close eye on those flying veggies because they could mean major health concerns for your little Yorkie puppy! Small dogs are especially vulnerable to poisonous foods since it does not take as much of one thing to seriously impair their health as it does for a larger dog. It may be safer to keep your dog out of the kitchen while you’re cooking to be sure no scraps are scarffed off of the floor before you have a chance to react.
Raisins & Grapes: It may amusing to watch your Puggle puppy try to chew a smooth, round grape – watching him try to chew it over and over again while it falls out of his mouth without so much as a dent. But grapes and raisins are poisonous to dogs causing vomiting, diarrhea and lethargy which can easily ruin your and your pup’s holiday season!
Macadamia Nuts: Your white chocolate macadamia nut cookies may be the best in the neighborhood. Tasty or not, macadamia nuts are poisonous to your French Bulldog puppy and all other breeds as well. While you’re baking, be sure there are no scraps falling on the floor and that all bags of nuts and other baking materials are put away and out of reach to avoid accidental ingestion.
Bones from Fish, Poultry and Meats: Oh we know, dogs practically do back-flips to get that juicy ham or turkey bone and will even try a handstand to taste those salmon bones but don’t give in, no matter how cute that sad face is from your Beabull puppy. While these bones are not poisonous, they can cause lacerations in the stomach lining or even a blockage in the digestive system. Better to be safe than sorry and let your dog settle for one of his store bought, pet approved bones.
Poinsettias: We’ve all heard that Poinsettias are poisonous to cats but they are also dangers for your little Maltipoo puppy as well. Try skipping the real plants for fake ones to display to keep each pet member of your house safe from accidental ingestion. The milky sap found in this plant can cause vomiting, anorexia and lethargy to your pet. The fake ones look just as beautiful and are a great alternative to keep your pets safe!
Over the holidays, it’s hard to deny your puppy “people food” or table scraps. But before you give in to those eyes, take a moment to think what is in that dish your dog is drooling over to make sure it’s nothing you’re going to regret later!
